About this deck

The deck starts with the seven Roman numeral symbols, then covers 1 to 20, the tens up to 100, key hundreds up to 1000, and a handful of years and larger numbers that combine several rules.

Each card shows the Roman numeral on the front and the ordinary number on the back. Flip the deck to practice writing numerals instead of reading them.

Roman numerals are usually taught in upper elementary school, and they still show up on clock faces, book chapters, film credits and event names.

Study tips

  • Memorize the seven symbols first: I 1, V 5, X 10, L 50, C 100, D 500, M 1000.
  • A smaller symbol before a larger one means subtract (IV = 4); after means add (VI = 6).
  • Only six subtractive pairs are standard: IV, IX, XL, XC, CD, CM.
  • Break long numerals into place values: MCMXCIX = M + CM + XC + IX = 1000 + 900 + 90 + 9.

Frequently asked questions

›What is the largest number you can write in standard Roman numerals?

3,999 (MMMCMXCIX). Larger numbers used other notations, such as a bar over a numeral to multiply it by 1,000.

›Why do some clocks show IIII instead of IV?

It is a long-standing clockmaking tradition. IV is the standard form, but IIII is not unusual on clock faces.

›Is there a Roman numeral for zero?

No. The Roman system had no symbol for zero.
