About this deck

These 100 cards cover the German words beginners need first: greetings, question words, people, food, places, time, core verbs and basic adjectives. German is on the front and English on the back.

Every noun is listed with its article (der, die or das) and, as German requires, a capital letter. Verbs are in the infinitive and adjectives in their base form.

The deck works well for A1 learners, travelers, and anyone starting German at school. Use the audio to hear each word.

Study tips

  • Learn each noun with its article as a single unit: "das Mädchen", not just "Mädchen".
  • Color-code genders if you print the cards: one color each for der, die and das.
  • Pay attention to ä, ö, ü and ß; they change both pronunciation and meaning.
  • Learn the vowel pairs early: "ei" sounds like English "eye", "ie" like "ee".

Frequently asked questions

›Why are all German nouns capitalized?

German grammar requires every noun to start with a capital letter, not just names. That makes nouns easy to spot.

›Is there a rule for der, die and das?

There are helpful patterns (nouns ending in -ung are die, -chen is das), but many nouns must simply be memorized with their article.

›Is this deck for Austrian or Swiss German too?

Yes, these are standard German words understood everywhere. Some regions have their own everyday alternatives.
