About this deck

This deck has one card for every letter of the English alphabet. The front shows the uppercase letter; the back shows the matching lowercase letter and a common, easy-to-picture word that starts with it.

It suits preschool and kindergarten children who are learning to name letters, and older learners of English who are new to the Latin alphabet. Each example word starts with the letter's most common sound where possible, so the cards also support early phonics.

Study the cards on screen with audio, or print them on card stock and cut them out. Printed cards work well for matching games on the floor or the fridge.

Study tips

  • Start with the letters in your child's name before working through Aโ€“Z in order.
  • Say the letter name, then the sound, then the word: "B โ€” /b/ โ€” ball."
  • Mix up the order after the first few days so recall does not depend on the alphabet song.
  • Keep sessions to five minutes and stop while it is still fun.
  • Point out the same letters on cereal boxes, signs and books during the day.

Frequently asked questions

โ€บShould my child learn uppercase or lowercase letters first?

Many teachers start with uppercase because the shapes are easier to tell apart, then add lowercase soon after. This deck shows both so you can do either.

โ€บWhy is the X card "fox" instead of a word starting with X?

Very few everyday words start with the /ks/ sound of X. "Fox" shows the sound X usually makes; "x-ray" and "xylophone" start with different sounds.

โ€บHow many cards should a preschooler study at once?

Three to five new letters at a time is plenty for most young children. Add more once those feel easy.
